Working with and for progressives, Labor, people of color, peace and justice organizations, and you to transform our society

When working people reject their economic interests and vote Republican on wedge issues of abortion and gay rights, it is partly because they haven't heard a Democratic economic agenda that speaks strongly to their needs. PDA proposes to win over "soccer moms," "NASCAR dads" and "swing voters" through an agenda of progressive tax reform, fair trade and economic security measures.

Economic Justice

PDA calls on Democrats in Congress to roll back Bush tax breaks for the wealthy--so that the richest 1 percent of Americans (with yearly incomes averaging $1.3 million) will not pocket $300 billion over the next four years. Tax burdens on the middle class can be eased if the wealthy pay their share. PDA supports fair trade that protects workers' rights and the environment, while opposing wage-reducing "free trade" agreements that protect only corporate rights to globally exploit unprotected labor. This year, PDA will work closely with allies like Sen. Sherrod Brown to block renewal of "fast track" authority, which allows the White House to enact trade deals without Congressional amendment.

Along with unfair trade deals like NAFTA, attacks on the right to unionize are a key factor in the decline of America's middle class. PDA endorses the Employee Free Choice Act, which establishes unions in any workplace where a majority of workers sign up. PDA also supports middle-class job creation through federal investment, such as the Apollo Alliance for renewable energy, and investment in wireless Internet networks.

Unions, good for workers and business

Founded over 30 years ago, Thompson Electric is today one of the largest electrical contractors in Ohio. Our success derives from an outstanding, loyal customer base, a strong commitment to provide residents of Northeast Ohio with quality service and a dedicated union work force. In fact, it's our relationship between management and our employees' union that has built a foundation of mutual respect, collaboration and shared prosperity with our employees.

Every day, responsible companies across the United States find it hard to compete against those who refuse to allow their employees to join unions, who pay substandard wages with little or no benefits, and who don't value the contributions their workers provide to the success of the business.

Thompson Electric is proof that unions are good for workers and good for business. Our positive, long-term partnership with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers is one of the main reasons that I, as an entrepreneur and business owner, support passage of the Employee Free Choice Act. More workers across the United States should be given a free and fair chance to form a union, just like our employees.

Our union workers receive the most cutting-edge job training available, and it pays off through lower injury rates, increased productivity and a strengthened ability to serve the people of Ohio. The union difference is not only impressive, but a valuable commodity in our line of work.

The Employee Free Choice Act will allow more workers the ability to bargain for better wages, benefits and retirement security, and when that happens, our communities will be strengthened. Local residents will have more money in their pockets to purchase homes, automobiles and needed goods and services, which in turn will help our ailing economy.
Increased incomes that result from union membership will expand our local tax base, helping adequately fund our schools, law enforcement, roads and bridges, and also helping the federal government pay down the deficit - key components to improving everyone's quality of life and maintaining future benefits for our children.

Current labor statistics will show that compared to the average worker of 20 years ago, the average worker today has less purchasing power. Many of today's families depend on two incomes to make ends meet, often with neither being offered adequate health-care coverage or retirement benefits. What will become of these young workers at retirement age or if a serious medical condition strikes a family member?

Unfortunately, communities won't get to see such benefits unless the law is reformed. Currently, too few workers get a chance at having a union. Employers often use illegal tactics to prevent their employees from organizing - nearly 30 percent of employers faced with an organizing effort fire workers for their support of a union. That's why our lawmakers from Ohio must join President Obama, a broad majority of supporters in Congress and an overwhelming majority of the American people in supporting the Employee Free Choice Act.

Not only will it allow more workers the ability to improve their standard of living, but it will also toughen penalties against companies that violate the law through illegal union-busting tactics.

In this time of economic strife and uncertainty, it's time to level the playing field and give every worker in this country a fair shot at achieving the American Dream. For decades, unions gave working men and women that opportunity, and our nation was better off. Now is the time for us to once again make common sense and long overdue changes in the way we treat our workers, and we can start by making the Employee Free Choice Act the law of the land.

Obama’s Chief Economic Adviser Opposes
Employee Free Choice Act and Unionization
By Harry Kelber

One day after the Employee Free Choice Act was introduced in both the House and Senate, Larry Summers, President Obama’s chief economic adviser, was quoted in a full-page ad in The New York Times as saying: “Another cause of long-term unemployment is unionization.” (March 11, 2009) The ad repeats Summer’s attack on unions, clearly linking it with opposition to EFCA. Here is the paragraph:

“Even President Obama’s chief economic adviser says unionization is a cause of long-term unemployment. The Employee (Free) Forced Choice Act is the last thing our fragile economy needs.”

Did Larry Summers clear his anti-union comments with President Obama? Did Obama give his approval? Clearly, the AFL-CIO must demand that the President publicly rebuke Summers or damage his own credibility.

While President Obama has developed a friendly relationship with top labor leaders, assuring them “a seat at the table,” he has indicated he would like to avoid a bloody battle between employers and organized labor over EFCA, since it could divert his attention from major problems, such as trade, the budget, health care and education. He would like to see a “compromise” on EFCA that would satisfy both business and labor.

Labor Must Use Bold Action to Win EFCA End Game

The AFL-CIO conducted an incredible and praiseworthy campaign by collecting two million signatures to an EFCA petition. Its rallies around the country and its radio and TV ads helped explain the need for this vital legislation to millions of Americans.

But our leaders wrongly anticipated that EFCA would glide to passage on a flood of e-mails. They underestimated the opposition and didn’t prepare to deal with it. We are now in the "end game" that will determine the fate of EFCA. Anti-union employers have vowed to spend whatever millions of dollars it takes to defeat EFCA. However, we have something they can’t match: 16 million union members,

At this stage, our unions must mobilize their members for a variety of “ground actions.” Let’s have 100,000 union men and women descend on Congress so they can see the faces of those who sent them e-mails. Let’s have groups conducting a siege before the office and home of every member of Congress until he or she agrees to vote in favor of EFCA. Let’s have a two-hour work stoppage across the country. Union members can think of other ways to make their point about the Employee Free Choice Act,

If EFCA is really important for the survival of unions, let's show we mean it.
